• 1831 He was invited to board a Royal Navy, the HMS Beagle as a guest naturalist

• • December 27, 1831 leave Plymouth

  • On the way to South Africa, the HMS Beagle stops at Cabo Verde

    • Observe the volcano activities

  • Stops at Rio de Janeiro

    • Official ship’s doctor left the ship

    • Darwin takes he position over even though he was not an official ship’s doctor

  • July 1834, the ship stopped at Valparaiso

    • Rested here for a month due to his physical condition

  • September 15,1835- October 20 stayed at San Cristobal  

    • Found out that there are many Galápagos tortoises with different adaptation( Idea of Natural Selection)  

    • He brought one toroise back and lived for 175 years (Dead: June 22, 2006)

  • October 2, 1836, back in Falmouth

    • The navigation was planned to take about 3 years, but ended up with taking 5 years

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

How did he came up with the idea??

→ His findings through his navigation over 5 years

①When he moved over coastal South America, he noticed that how the organisms seems to be closely related little by little

②he discovered a large mammal fossils that did not  survive at that time in South America

③ Many of the Galapagos Island’s organisms are similar to the organisms in South America that help him to think that they are from South America

Throughout his navigation, from the difference of fauna and flora of the southern hemisphere, the species were created independently and they cannot have immutable characteristics, meaning they should change somewhat over the long period of time until the presence.

Idea of Natural Selection

The Natural selection is the idea that the better traits that adapt to a  specific environment will survive and passed on to the next generation.  The better trait is based on their environmental pressures, their predators, changes in climate, or competition for food between the mates.

 

Example

For example, in one ecosystem, there are two types of lizards. One has short legs and one has longer legs. The lizard with the longer legs will likely to survive because they can reach food much faster than the ones with the shorter legs.
